a shiny button tutorial

after reading this : (The annoying Inkscape shiny button trauma) i was inspired to write a new tutorial, and i encourage you to write one like it and post it on your blog. here it is:

my rant:

The growing amount of inkscape tutorials is nothing to complain about,
it is a sign that the inkscape userbase is growing and learning.
Don’t criticise the community, join it, and help it grow!

my rant is over.

I feel cheated - that guy have not linked to any of my tutorials as being redundant…
I think I should write something… but I think I want to add some personal twist, I am in searching for that.

BTW, I wonder how many shiny button tutorials are there for Illustrator or Photoshop? I guess a lot more…

OK, here is my take: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/2007/07/inkscape-shiny-button-redundant.html

BTW, Ryan, you may want to edit your article and add rel=”nofollow” to the link to popolon.org :D

i thought it was funny that my two tutorials that were in the blog were
my orb tutorial, (which i was more about using blur and clipping than making a “shiny” orb)
    and
my beveled text tutorial got ragged on because it apparently told you how to do the “reflected” text that you see everywhere, but the point of the tutorial was to do the simple bevel, i just put the reflection on there after :P

go figure - it seems he did not even read my tutorials…
oh, ive added the rel=”nofollow” thanks for the heads up mate!

At some level I understand (but not agree) with his point: if there were on the web only a couple of (very good) shiny button tutorials and everybody else linked to those, then anyone searching for a tutorial would find a quality one.

But things are not like that in the real life: there are so many ways to draw a button and so many little options available that you can’t just consider one tutorial right and the other wrong.
OTOH, an enthusiast decide to write his *first* tutorial, of course he will start with something simple, like a button and move to more complex things once his experience increases.

And there is a place for everyone, I see a lot of people fascinated when they discover for the first time how to create a button or orb with either Inkscape, GIMP or some proprietary application. And those new users are the majority..

i agree fully with this, this is how i learnt inkscape, by writing tutorials… that text one was my first :P
i could understand if i was requesting payment for my tutorials, that people would be disapointed, but when we both (nicu and me) do tutorials we clearly give a “result” image and if someone thinks that they are too advanced for my tutorial, they have only wasted about 10 seconds.

First I want to thank your for you comments.
Then I want to say to you that I don’t care of number of toshop or trator tutorials, because I don’t use these softwares and don’t want todo. I’m also really happy about the incredible grown of tutorials for inkscape in the previous weeks, with lot of various ideas.
That’s more than I want to give people it would be a good Idea to explain other technics too and don’t loose to much time on the basic version of this tutorial.
I agree than differents effects can be done on shiny and this should be interesting. Anyway this article could help by being the source of most of shiny buttons tutorials, including this post.

Sorry Nicu if I miss your tuto on shiny button, I was already tired of copy/paste lot of links on the same subject and don’t want to search anymore.

It could be a good Idea too to categorize on inkscape wiki, tutorials links by effects.

Oh, sorry I forget, I liked your Simple Orb / Bubble tutorial using clipping. I used it to draw a folded condom, that is really near this shape at step four.

I don’t say that for laugh or anything bad, that’s was just a 10cents Idea. Could be useful for ads against aides.

Geez, the next thing you know they’ll be complaining about text reflection effects.. ;)

When I did my first shiny button-type tutorials and screencasts I was really trying to get across the fact that many of those fancy effects are so much more easily created in Inkscape rather than Photoshop. I was amazed that you could create a perfectly serviceable button in Inkscape 4 times quicker. Nothing wrong with being proud of that is there?

I agree with you Ryan. If a million shiny button tutorials is the worst symptom of the popularity growth of Inkscape then we should be happy!
